What is CBD Isolate & How Do I Use It?

If you’re looking to buy the purest form of CBD out there, the answer is CBD isolate. It’s an extremely versatile substance and can be used to make numerous products or added to your favourite food and drinks.

What is CBD isolate?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a compound found in cannabis. It is a phytocannabinoid (one of many in cannabis including THC) but does not share THC’s intoxicating effects. Instead, it’s often used for therapeutic reasons like combatting anxiety or managing pain.

CBD isolate is made by isolating and extracting CBD from the rest of the plant using various extraction methods. Here at Mellow, we extract CBD using CO2 to guarantee a clean, odourless and flavourless crystalline powder that can be used in many different ways.

Overall, CBD isolate is a white powder or crystal that contains absolutely no THC, terpenes, or other cannabinoids from the cannabis plant. This is in contrast with other forms of CBD, like full spectrum or broad spectrum, where terpenes and other cannabinoids remain present in the final product.

Why we like using CBD isolate

We recommend CBD isolate for a number of reasons. You can add it to coffee, smoothies, dinner recipes, and more without adding additional flavour. It’s also a great tool for making your own personalized CBD tinctures. But there are many other reasons people choose to use CBD isolate over other forms.

Benefits of CBD isolate:

  • Less expensive than some full or broad-spectrum varieties
  • Completely THC-free
  • Flavourless and odourless
  • Easy to measure and cook with
  • Can be less messy than CBD oils

CBD isolate vs other forms of cannabidiol

All of the benefits listed are reasons why CBD isolate may be chosen over CBD oils or other products. The lack of THC is a huge factor, but so is overall versatility. Since CBD isolate is in powder form, it’s easy to measure and can be added into a variety of recipes. That’s not the case with CBD oil tinctures or other products, especially when they have a distinct earthy flavor.

Cost is also a huge factor. Buying CBD isolate to add to your own recipes or make your own products with can be a more affordable option than purchasing premade blends.

However, CBD isolate may not be the top choice for people who want powerful therapeutic effects from their CBD. When you isolate CBD, you remove all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds present in the plant.

CBD isolate versus broad or full spectrum

Broad-spectrum CBD contains other cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant, not just CBD. However, there is no THC present in broad-spectrum CBD. Instead, it contains other beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes.

Similarly, full-spectrum CBD contains other cannabinoids, including THC, along with terpenes and other compounds. The THC levels are low in full-spectrum hemp derived CBD and incapable of getting users intoxicated. If you’re completely avoiding THC though, full-spectrum is not the right choice for you.

It’s believed that the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other plant parts present in cannabis synergize with one another to create stronger effects. This means the therapeutic effects of broad or full-spectrum CBD may be better than CBD isolate.

However, it’s important to note that different people work better with different forms of CBD. Finding the right CBD dose, method of consumption, and form of CBD can take a bit of trial and error.

How to use CBD isolate

The easiest way to consume CBD isolate is to ingest it. Just measure out your optimal dose (or start around 10-20 mg if you’re not sure) and dissolve it into your favourite drinks or mix it in with food. This should allow the CBD to take effect within 30-60 minutes or so.

You can also measure out a dose and simply put it under your tongue to cause quicker effects. Allow it to dissolve under your tongue for at least 60 seconds before washing it down. The CBD will absorb into the bloodstream quickly from here.
